Cats and Dragons? Sign me up!

Updated: Jan 8, 2021

So, it's been a while since I've written a book review for anything that wasn't a fairytale retelling. But I had the delightful pleasure of being an ARC reader for the book A Cat's Guide to Bonding with Dragons, by Chris Behrsen. It's the first book in a trilogy about a Cat who... you guessed it, bonds with a dragon. This was my final read of 2020 and it was a fun and light hearted way to end a stressful year. I look forward to reading the other two books in the series at a later date.

In this story, Ben the Cat who is trapped in a warlock's tower seizes on an oppotrunity to escape. When he is wandering aimlessly in the wilderness, not knowing what to do he follows an enormous creature in the sky into the mountains, where he finds DRAGONS. He meets a dragon who has not bonded with a dragon rider yet and the rest is history.

I mean, you don't have to say much more to me than a Cat and a Dragon are friends to pique my interest. I mean I love cats. I love dragons. What a fun idea.

I loved the fun first person voice of Ben the cat. The author did a nice job with Ben's confusion about how the world works because he's... well, a cat. The only complaint I would have about this book is that while it was aimed at a young adult audience, it definitely dipped into a very young young adult or maybe even middle grade feel. It was very reminiscient of that highly stylized old fashioned way of writing fantasy books for kids, only instead of the omniscient narrator explaining everything it was a cat. It didn't turn me off of the book because I also love kids books (I teach 5th grade and would totally read this book to my class or suggest it to my students for their own reading pleasure) but if you are going in looking for a young adult read, you could be dissapointed.

Overall, I would give A Cat's Guide to Bonding with Dragons 4 stars, for a unique concept, interesting world building, and a funny narrative voice.

The unlikely duo who might just save the world

Ben must be the hungriest cat ever…

One moment, he was enjoying a breakfast of salmon trimmings in his home in South Wales. The next, he was teleported across time and space onto the cold stone floor of an evil warlock.

Locked in the warlock’s tower through day and night, Ben may have to serve him for a while. He'll hate this, especially having to hunt those infernal demon rats when the warlock doesn’t feed him well at all.

Meanwhile, in a distant academy, a dragon is bored out of her mind. Unable to wear a saddle, no human dares mount her. Is there anyone in this land who can ride her into battle against the forces of the evil warlocks? Somehow, she doubts she’ll ever find a suitable bond.

Unless there is another creature with enough dexterity to fulfil that role. One, perhaps, who is currently sprinting right out of a warlock’s front door…
